Research work is with nontuberculous mycobacteria, a group of bacteria closely related to the agent that causes tuberculosis. This includes groups known as rapidly growing mycobacteria and Mycobacterium avium complex. Research work includes clinical and laboratory studies of new drugs for treatment of these diseases, treatment trials of these drugs, and DNA fingerprinting to study how these organisms are spread from one source to another and if outbreak of epidemic strains are the same or different. Additional research work includes testing of isolates of other aerobic actinomyetes, including Nocardia sp., Gordonia, Rhodococcus, Tsukamurella, Streptomyces, etc.

The Department of Microbiology Mycobacteria/Nocardia Laboratory is a CLIA licensed and a CAP (College of American Pathologists) accredited laboratory.
